Jenna Owens

Jenna Owens is a UCO ACM student who creates “indie sad girl” music She creates at UCO ACM and believes that the program is “what you put in is what you get out”.

Owens found her passion for music when she was around three or four,  watching American Idol and seeing Carrie Underwood win during the show. Even on career days in elementary school, Owens would say she wanted to be a singer.

“Always in the back of my mind, I knew I wanted to be a singer.” Owens took guitar lessons for a couple of years with one of her teachers from the Tulsa area. “He talked with me once where he told me that it takes a special kind of person to want to sing as a career.”

Owens decided to further her dreams of being a singer by going to UCO ACM. ACM is the Academy of Contemporary Music based in OKC. “A lot of students drop out because they think that there are just not a lot of opportunities for them”. Owens said, “It’s all about using the connections that you make, there are a lot of opportunities if you pay attention”.

“You have to be able to push for what you want to do.”

Owens' music is her and her acoustic guitar talking about her feelings. She creates all her music on ACM’s campus. On her Instagram, you can see her working in the studio and creating music.

Owens released an EP in May of 2023. The EP is titled Dear Diary with 7 songs running 26 minutes. The EP took 3  months to produce fully and was written in 2 weeks. “I was recording and editing songs in my free time from January to March.”

“This idea I have had in my brain for years I could like, boom, put it on a piece of paper,” said Owens.

When creating and performing her work, Owens works solo. Owens plays guitar and ukulele and mainly does acoustic sets.

Owens’s favorite song to perform is a tie between Dear Diary and Teen Movie Moment. “Dear Diary is one of the most realist songs I've released. It has a lot of that cathartic modern baseball energy.”

Owens' writing process happens when she comes up with a lyric for a song or section. She then frantically writes it down on paper so she doesn't forget it.

“I'll end up writing the full songs from those pieces I write down. ”
